Fall Lawn Care

An inviting landscaped yard is something we prioritize here at Prime Custom Builders. We know a lawn worthy of your pride does not just come about with mere wishful thinking. And no doubt, you have been busy with your yard all summer long. A break from yard work during the colder months is undoubtably welcome. If you want a bright, lush lawn come spring, however, we have some final fall lawn care steps for you to follow.

Rake Leaves

Who doesn’t adore the lovely hues of gold and burnt orange that the fall season offers us? Just be sure to admire them while they are still on the trees. Once they fall to your yard, you will want to rake them up swiftly. The reason for this is because when those dead leaves cover up your grass, they will hinder it from receiving light. On top of that, rain and snow fall will result in wet leaves, of course, which will further aid in murdering your grass. Give your grass a leg up come spring and do not let it get smothered by fallen leaves.

Don’t Forget to Water

Autumn surely comes along with more precipitation, and although with colder temperatures your yard will retain water for longer, that does not mean that you need to discontinue watering all together just yet. To keep your lawn alive and well, it needs to receive at least an inch of water a week. So, be sure to keep your irrigation system running until the end of October for good measure.

The Ideal Haircut

If you have not had a hard frost quite yet, you will want to continue to mow your lawn. A good trim height should be about 2.5 inches long. Bonuses for mowing in the fall including chewing up those fallen leaves, leaving behind a nice mulch to feed your grass.

Feed

Speaking of feeding. A late fall fertilizer will go a long way in setting your grass up for success in the spring. A slow release 20-0-10 formula will protect the roots from freezing and give it the energy to bounce back when things warm back up.

Aerate

Soil naturally compacts over time. Compacted soil eventually prevents water and nutrients from reaching roots where it is needed. If you make it a habit of aerating in the fall just before you fertilize, you will insure the health and happiness of your lawn.

Reseed

Armed with a seeded mulch, fall is an excellent time to fill in any dead patches in your yard. With the ground still warm, the seeds will have a solid chance at being well established come spring. On top of that, a tightly filled lawn will prevent weeds from finding purchase. A welcome added bonus.

No more eyesores! With a little prep work, your lawn will be sure to bring a smile to your face. If you are looking for a home with a little more to offer in the landscaping area, Prime Custom Builders would love to help make that dream a reality for you.
