The Best Indoor Plants to Grow for Fresh Produce

Fresh produce that is picked directly from your garden is far superior to what you can find in the produce aisle of a big-box supermarket. You may also find better produce at a farmer’s market, but you may not have the pleasure of living near one. Prime Custom Builders would love to share a couple of fruits and vegetables that you can easily grow in the comfort of your home today!

Getting Started

The first step to growing healthy plants is to purchase pots that have the right drainage holes. If your pots do not have the proper holes, the roots can basically drown and die when you water the plants.

Next, look around your home to determine the sunniest spots. If you plant fruit, you will need a lot of sunlight. If you think you don’t have an area with enough sunlight, invest in grow lights. Check online and compare prices. It doesn’t have to be a very expensive setup for grow lights to work.

Best Fruits to Grow Indoors

Tomatoes

Tomatoes offer potassium, vitamin C, and lycopene. They are a great fruit that will grow well indoors. You can either start them from seed or buy an established plant. Make sure you use stakes on the stems as they grow to prevent breakage. Keep the plants in a sunny spot and turn the pot once a week. You can promote pollination when your plants begin to bloom by tapping on the sides of the main stems.

Lemons

Lemons are full of vitamin C and are another great fruit to plant indoors. If you choose to plant from seed, it could take years before fruit begins to grow. Instead, purchase a young dwarf tree from a local nursery. Make sure that it gets about 10-12 hours of light each day. Only water the plant when you notice that the top two inches of soil have become dry.

Best Vegetables to Grow Indoors

Garlic Greens

Having fresh garlic to add to your meals is wonderful. Growing garlic bulbs indoors may not be the best idea for an inexperienced grower. However, garlic greens are much easier. Buy a garlic bulb and plant it pointy end up. Place the pot in a sunny area of your home and you’ll have garlic sprouts before you know it! Use herb scissors to carefully trim off whatever you need.

Microgreens

Microgreens are full of vitamins A, C, and K. They are great on salads and are easily grown. Head to your local garden center and buy a variety of microgreen seeds and a shallow seed tray. Spread a thin layer of soil in the tray before sprinkling the seeds on top. Cover the seeds with another thin layer of soil. Spray the soil with a spray bottle every day. In just a few days the seeds will germinate. From there, harvest what you plan to use as you would do with any other herb.

This is just a tiny list to get you started- you can certainly grow many other fruits, vegetables, and herbs inside your home. Prime Custom Builders is here to talk about many other subjects that homeowners are interested in, so make sure you take a look at our other blogs!
